Starting Therapy

New to therapy or just want to know what to expect? Here's what you need to know.

  • At Being Human Psychology we primarily work with adults over the age of 18.

  • No, you do not need a doctor’s referral in order to see a psychologist.

However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate ($98.95 per session), you will need to see your GP and obtain a valid Mental Health Care Plan for psychology sessions prior to your first appointment.

  • Being Human Psychology operates from two locations in Olinda Victoria.

If you’d prefer a virtual session, we’ve got you, you can let us know you’d like the session to be online when you book your appointment.

  • Your first session is about getting to know each other. We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, your goals, and answer any questions you have. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with, we'll go at your pace.

  • The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and needs. Some people find relief in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly check in about your progress and discuss what feels right for you.

  • Yes. Everything you share in therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions (risk of harm to yourself or others, child safety concerns, or if required by law). We can discuss confidentiality in detail during your first session.

  • Therapeutic fit matters. If you don't feel we're the right match, that's okay! We can discuss it openly and help you find another therapist who might be a better fit.

  • Yes, you're welcome to bring a support person to your first session if that would help you feel more comfortable. Just let us know when you book.

  • Just yourself! If you have a Mental Health Care Plan or any previous psychological reports, feel free to bring those. Otherwise, we've got everything we need.

Fee’s & Policies

Transparency matters. Here's what sessions cost and what to expect.

  • Our standard sessions run for 50 minutes and are available both in-person and via Telehealth, whatever feels most comfortable for you.

Our consultation fees are as follows:

    • Standard Session: $250

    • After Hours Session: $280

We aim for service accessibility by ensuring our fees remain below the recommended fee of $318+ as set out by Australian Psychology Society (APS) and the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPi).

  • If you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP, you may be eligible a Medicare rebate of $98.95 for up to 10 sessions each calendar year.

Medicare rebates are processed after full payment of the consultation has been made.

Please note that cancellation fees are not eligible for a Medical rebate.

  • When you book an appointment, your clinician sets aside the full hour just for you. We understand that life can be unpredictable, and we do our best to be flexible, while also ensuring others on our waiting list have the opportunity to access support.

Here’s how our cancellation policy works:

    • 48+ hours notice: no fee

    • Between 24–48 hours’ notice: 50% of the session fee

    • Less than 24 hours’ notice: 100% of the session fee

    • Non-attendance (no notice): 100% of the session fee

  • Yes, if you are self-managed.

We are only taking self-managed NDIS clients due to administrative limitations. In this instance, the client is required to pay the amount owing and present their NDIS management with a copy of their receipt in order to be reimbursed.

  • No, unfortunately we don’t work with Work Cover due to administrative limitations.
